Sizewell B Dry Fuel Store – Long-Term Strategy Integration

Location: Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station Status: Ongoing (2019 – Present)
Owners: Max Vollans & Jonathan Scott
To support EDF’s nuclear generation capabilities, the first transfer of spent fuel assemblies from Fuel Storage Pond to the Dry Fuel Store took place in 2017. The programme transfers spent fuel assemblies through dry storage campaigns conducted approximately every three years. Funded by the UK’s Nuclear Liabilities Fund (NLF), the project seeks long-term security, improved efficiency, and cost-saving innovations across its lifecycle.
Recognising opportunities for both marginal efficiency gains and significant technical upgrades, Acuity Engineering was engaged as a trusted partner to support Framatome Limited’s strategic services to the programme. Acuity leads the feasibility works under the long-term DFS strategy. This includes optimisation of critical process elements and bespoke nuclear equipment such as High Integrity Lifting (HIL), fuel cooling systems and the fuel storage and transfer components.
Operating within the technical and regulatory rigour of an operational power station environment, the challenge lay in balancing engineering innovation with value-added outcomes and ensuring all work continued to reduce risks ALARP. Acuity needed to translate complex technical and regulatory requirements into actionable, cost-efficient solutions that protected the safety case.
Drawing on a strong history of DFS involvement and site-based delivery, Acuity leveraged established relationships and deep technical understanding to position the project for success. We enabled collaborative engagement across key stakeholders, including the Design Authority and Nuclear Services teams and EDF’s supply chain partners, ensuring timely decision-making and technical rigor at every project phase. Our focus was to deliver sustained value throughout the cyclic delivery model, supporting lifetime extension and the eventual end-of-generation strategy.
During the 2024/25 Gate A delivery phase, Acuity is leading a substantial package of front-end engineering design (FEED) activities, alongside architect engineering and safety case support within a broader multi-phase programme. These strategic efforts are expected to generate significant cost savings for the Nuclear Liabilities Fund, with direct benefits realised through enhanced operational efficiency and targeted technical improvements.
Acuity’s continued technical leadership is enabling smarter, safer, and more efficient dry fuel storage for one of the UK’s flagship nuclear assets.
