Max Vollans

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Max is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with a focus on mechanical handling systems and safety-critical plant design for nuclear environments. His experience spans the full UK nuclear lifecycle, from decommissioning and active generation to fusion test facility development. 


He has a strong track record in safety case development, design verification, and high-integrity lifting systems, delivering compliant and efficient engineering solutions. Known for a pragmatic, proportionate approach, Max balances safety, functionality, and cost while leading multidisciplinary teams and engaging with stakeholders. 


Recent work includes leading the dry fuel store value proposition workstream at Sizewell B, evaluating mechanical systems for the UKAEA Fusion Materials Test Facility, and designing ILW handling & maintenance systems for the Sellafield RAP Project. He has also contributed to commissioning high-integrity lifting equipment, specifying bespoke waste systems, and integrating PLC-based safety functions into mechanical designs. His work has supported key decommissioning programmes at Sellafield, Magnox, and the Environment Agency, consistently aligning engineering outcomes with regulatory and operational needs. 

Key Skills and Achievements

Lifting & Mechanical Handling Systems: Led the design of high-integrity lifting equipment and fuel handling systems in compliance with nuclear codes and safety functions. 


Safety Case Expertise: CAT2 AV2 author and verifier for mechanical systems at Sizewell B, including dry fuel storage operations. 


Project Management: Package lead for complex multi-discipline work packages for a fusion materials test facility and mechanical plant at Sellafield. Workstream lead for long-term strategy/value proposition feasibility work at Sizewell B. 


Engineering Management: Authorized SQEP checker/approver for mechanical calculations and drawings, responsible for GO/NO GO design release, and led single/multi-discipline design reviews. Managed technical and program delivery, including technical resource line management and mentorship. 


Commissioning & Testing: Developed and implemented test and commissioning strategies for multiple CAT2 EC nuclear lifting systems and plant equipment. 


Stakeholder Reporting: Regular engagement with client directors and technical teams; experienced in CAPEX business case development. 


Likes: Classic motorbike restoration (Honda / Kawasaki) & home-built workshops, Music production & live music (All genres), Asian cuisine (all encompassing) and world travel.
